Wakey Wakey Snakey Snakey

800.00

Acrylic gouache and glitter on watercolor paper, 18 x 24", 2016.

Set in a vintage canary yellow wood frame, the painting is wired and ready to hang. It measures 18 x 24" from edge to edge.

Symbols of the spiritual and the mundane collide within the generative space of the painting, an arena for these icons to interact.  Multitudinous eyes and lips orbit a central character of mutable identity. The mask-like visage is numb, mesmerized or ecstatic in the face of this glut of iconography. The image allows for a distracted yet engaged viewing, a vibrant visual oscillation. Digital, historical, sexual and sacred iconography ricochet against pillowy fields of pigment and glitter. Diverse symbols flatten into a unified field, treated with the sam level of detail. The placement of this imagery onto the same plane suggests an equalizing force dissolving boundaries between sacred and profane.

The image speaks to the digital ubiquity of imagery, a roiling sea of disembodied, decontextualized images. My meticulous painting process represents a slowing down, a method of loving care and focused awareness. The gradual build up of layers of matte paint into a pristine plane exists in opposition to glossy digital surfaces and their fleeting images.
